X-windows

x-windows is the graphical user interface in many unix/linux systems. KDE, Gnome etc are some of the applications that run on x-windows. The command xwin usually starts x-windows session from the x-term (terminal) command mode.

The x.org project provides support to open source development of x-windows, in partnership with freedesktop.org project. The xfree86.org project provides graphical applications to x-windows. In the past, X-windows was installed in powerful graphical intenstive machines such as Sun Sparc Workstations, Silicon Graphics (IRIX) workstations etc.

From the terminal mode, one can kickstart X-windows through the 'startx' command or the xwindows manager 'xwin' command, as applicable.
