OS: Older versions of MS windows before WinNT

This file was used to boot the system in older versions. The new file boot.ini has replaced most of its role, in conjunction with config.sys file. It is located in the root directory (C:). Commands in this file are invoked upon booting (powering up) a system.

Some likely commands in autoexec.bat are

@echo off (turns of printing on terminal)
SET PATH=C:\Windows;C:\ (these are similar to .login or .bashrc files in Linux)

The file is still very relevant in many developing and underdeveloped countries that are using old versions like Windows-98 and Windows-2000. It goes hand-in-hand with config.sys file where system and device driver configurations can be specified.

Some likely commands in config.sys are

DEVICE=C:\Windows\HIMEM.SYS (memory management)
DEVICEHIGH=C:\Windows\COMMAND\ANSI.SYS (display management)
FILES=20 (preloading limit to number of files)
BUFFERS=12 (setting buffers to load windows or other applications)
